Blend Buddies: Stop, Flag, Clap

I can blend beginning consonant sounds to read words.

Let’s get started

Sometimes two consonants keep their own sounds but blend smoothly.

Learn together

  1. Say /s/ then /t/ and blend them to start “stop.”
  2. Try /f/ then /l/ to start “flag.”
  3. Try /c/ then /l/ to start “clap.” Each sound stays in the blend.

Example to explore

st-op → stop fl-ag → flag cl-ap → clap

Try it yourself

  1. Which word starts with the blend /fl/?
  2. What two letters begin “stop”?
  3. Write one word that starts with cl, st, or fl and read it to someone.

Hands-on project

Create a blend treasure map with pictures labeled stop, flag, clap and one word you discover.

Reflect and grow

Which blend could you hear most clearly?
