Sort Our Short Vowels

I can spell and group short-vowel CVC words.

Let’s get started

Listen for the vowel in the middle of each short word.

Learn together

  1. Say “cat” and stretch its sounds: /c/ /a/ /t/.
  2. Say “bed” and listen for /e/ in the middle.
  3. Group words by their middle vowel sound.

Example to explore

a: cat e: bed i: pig o: hop u: sun

Try it yourself

  1. Which vowel is in the middle of pig?
  2. Complete: s_n (the yellow star in the sky)
  3. Write two short-vowel words that rhyme.

Hands-on project

Create a vowel sorting mat with five sections and add picture cards.

Reflect and grow
