Open and Closed Syllables

I can distinguish basic open and closed syllables to predict vowel sounds.

Let’s get started

A syllable ending with a vowel is often open; one ending with a consonant is often closed.

Learn together

  1. Read “me”: this open syllable ends with e, which says its name.
  2. Read “met”: a consonant closes the syllable, making e short.
  3. Compare “hi/hit” and the first syllable of “robot.” Listen and sort with a grown-up.

Example to explore

me (open) / met (closed) hi (open) / hit (closed)

Try it yourself

  1. Which syllable is open?
  2. Which syllable is closed?
  3. Write an open/closed pair such as he/hen and explain the vowel sound.

Hands-on project

Make an illustrated sorting game with cards for me, met, hi, hit, go, got and read each pair.

Reflect and grow

What letter helped you decide whether the syllable was open or closed?
