Listen for Beginning Sounds

I can hear and spell the beginning sound in simple words.

Let’s get started

Spelling begins with listening. The first sound is the sound we hear at the start of a word.

Learn together

  1. Say “moon” slowly. Hear /m/ at the start. The letter m spells that sound.
  2. Say “sun.” Hear /s/ at the start. The letter s spells that sound.
  3. Say “top.” Hear /t/ at the start. The letter t spells that sound.

Example to explore

moon → m sun → s top → t

Try it yourself

  1. What letter starts sun?
  2. Type the first letter in moon.
  3. Think of another word that starts with /t/. Write or dictate it.

Hands-on project

Build an m/s/t sound museum using drawings of objects that start with each sound.
